How to celebrate Halloween in Hong Kong

Hong Kong doesn’t celebrate Halloween as extravagantly as in western countries, but there is one place in particular where you can see people in full costume and scary makeup: Lan Kwai Fong. Every year on the 31st of October, Lan Kwai Fong hosts its annual Halloween Street Party. However, this year Halloween falls on a Tuesday, so the streets of LKF have been teeming with ghouls and monsters over the weekend as well.

To mark the occasion, many popular nightclubs and bars pass out free entry coupons, and if you’re lucky, tickets for free drinks too! However, there’s always the possibility that they run out of coupons, so if you can, try to get there early!

Another annual LKF Halloween tradition is the Monster Mash games. This year, they’ve partnered up with HK Express and Huawei, offering extravagant prizes for the top winners.

For those of you lucky enough not to have school or work on Wednesday, make sure to party it up this Tuesday night! And if you don’t have a costume in mind, (shame on you!) here’s a couple last minute ideas for you.

  1. Pennywise

With the record-breaking success of the IT remake, Pennywise the Dancing Clown is definitely going to be a popular costume this year. Don’t worry though, because there are (literally) hundreds of tutorials online, that all seem to put their own twists on the classic scream-inducing makeup look.

  1. Wednesday Addams

This costume will never go out of style. Black lipstick, a black dress with a Peter Pan collar, pigtails, and a frightening scowl is all you need for this cute, yet creepy costume.

  1. The Joker (Heath Ledger’s version of course!)

Of course, we can’t forget the guys. Here’s another classic costume that’s easy, but one that will definitely make an impact. White face paint, messy black eyeshadow around the eyes, and smeared red lipstick – but don’t forget the maniacal laughter!
